| Ray Hocking - 1929-2015: PKP's First Publisher Passes | posted by the ICPKP Webmaster 1:13 PM, 20 July 2015 NZST | Ray Hocking: journalist, editor, desktop publishing pioneer
and much loved brother-in-law and friend.
Ray Hocking, Bruce and Joan's much loved brother-in-law, was (to use the Salvation Army term) Promoted to Glory on 14 Feb 2015.
Bruce was just 10 when this elegant young Englishman appeared on the scene and seemed only to have eyes for his sister Lorraine - who from a boy's perspective already had a boyfriend with the latest Sunbeam Alpine sports car. Ray was a journalist and inspired Bruce about the power of 'words' by many visits to newspaper offices when everything was happening to get the next paper out. He also made sure Bruce learned all the aspects of publishing - back in the days of hot lead and Linotype machines.
Ray left the newspaper world to become editor in chief of the AA magazine, NZ Motorworld, which was one of the first magazines in NZ to go digital. Yes, it all happened on a original Macintosh with the 9" screen.
Bruce and Ray went to motor races, worked together painting, scraping down second-hand bricks for brick walls and building a garage when Bruce was young. The skills Ray taught him in so many fields remain with him today. (As a former Military Police driver, Ray taught Bruce driving skills that helped with hill-climb racing.)
PKP™ moved from a Microsoft publication to Pagemaker® when Ray showed Bruce the benefits of proper page layout and helped Bruce & Joan publish PKP 1 as a book with a layout similar to that used today. Ray took all the original b&w pictures used in our books. Each time we found the points for a new muscle we needed a new photo and we would turn to Ray for his expertise.
In his retirement Ray was still working alongside Bruce & Joan whether it was in InDesign or with a paintbrush. Bruce says, "I miss Ray, but remember the fun we had, every time I sit down at the computer." Ray's knowledge and skill had much to do with the professional presentation that PKP™ materials have had from way back in the early 1980s. | [ Back to Mainmenu ] |
