Dr. Bruce Dewe MD Journal

Do something you have never done before!

Dr Bruce Dewe and his lovely wife, Joan, enjoy drag racing their Segway personal transporters in HawaiiJoan and I recently returned to Hawaii for a conference. One goal we had, while away, was to do something fun that we had never done before. ICPKP teaches the concept of life-long learning. Our motto is Learning, Growing, Embacing Life. Having been to Hawaii several times over the last 25 years it could have been a challenge to find something new or different to do. However, it was easy. On St Patrick's Day we saw several Segway Human Transporters in the parade. They looked fun and fitted our criteria.

We found Segway™ Experience of Honolulu at 2155 Kalakaua Blvd, on the Plaza next to Planet Hollywood Restaurant, and directly in front of the Weyland Gallery store. Bill, the owner, had us watch a safety video and then patiently taught us how to ride and control these wonderful machines.

As you can see, we had enormous fun and didn't want to give them back again. They safe, easy to ride, turn on a dime and stop easily. Really, Segway™ could be the answer to inner city transport. Imagine several dozen of them dotted around the inner city each with a swipe-card that not only billed a credit card but ensured only Segway™-trained drivers could operate them. Taxis would become redundant or would be reserved for longer trips. Go to www.segway.com for more information or, when in Hawaii check, out http://www.segwayhi.com/locations.htm, then go and see Bill Haley for a lesson, your licence, and take a Segway™ Experience Tour.

Kinesiologists who use 'whole-body' testing will find these machines a breeze to operate. Lean forward to 'go', lean back to reverse and stand upright to stop. Bend the knees to emergency brake. Now, I need an excuse to have one at home. I simply can't justify having one for 'walking' the waterfront in Auckland - because that's my exercise!.
