Prostate Cancer - Swedish Study and Prevention

A study published in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association by Swedish researchers from the University Hospital, Orebro looked at 223 patients aged 41 to 91 from central Sweden with prostate cancer that was caught early and initially left untreated. Three times as many people died more than 15 years after diagnosis as died in the first 15 years after diagnosis. Dr Dewe offers simple, practical suggestions to help prevent becoming a prostate cancer statistic.

Prof. William H. Mueller, professor of behavioral science at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, is quoted in Google Health News as saying. Crohn's Disease - new hope

A new study reported in New England Journal of Medicine, Feb. 26, 2004; vol 350: pp 876-885 gives new hope to people with Crohn's disease using long-term treatment with the drug Remicade. Almost half a million people in the U.S.suffer from Crohn's disease a chronic inflammatory disorder of the digestive tract that causes symptoms such as diarrhoea and abdominal pain. One devastating complication of Crohn's disease is the development of fistulas. Fistulas are openings from affected areas of the intestine into other organs or on to the skin, such as around the anus. Fistulas increase the probability of surgery and negatively impacts on the quality of life of a person's life.

An Orange a Day

Today, Jan 14 2004, www.realage.com quoted a report suggesting that getting 1,200 milligrams of vitamin C per day from food and supplements can make your 'Real Age' as much as 1 year younger. The claim is that just one extra serving of citrus fruits each day may reduce the risk of cancers of the mouth, larynx, and stomach by as much as 50 percent. Researchers credit the antioxidant properties of vitamin C-rich citrus fruits for the possible cancer-fighting benefits.
